Terms of service

The terms for the $9.99 digital picture book sold from these English pages. Written to match what we actually do, so there's nothing here we can't hold up.

Buying a book means you agree to what's on this page. If we change it, the last-updated date at the top moves, and the version in force is the one that was up when you paid.

What you're buying

One personalized picture book: 24 pages, written and illustrated for one specific child, delivered as a print-ready PDF for $9.99. The AI drafts the story and the art, and a person rewrites the words and approves every page before it goes out.

It's a file, not a parcel. Nothing is shipped to you. We do print and bind hardcovers, but only inside Japan, and we don't ship printed books abroad — so there's no printed edition to order from these pages.

How the order works

  • You pay on Stripe's page and tell us the child's name and age there, plus anything else you want in the story.
  • You email us two or three photos of them at info@kater.jp. We draw the character from those, so we can't start without them.
  • We send the finished PDF back to that address within 7 business days of having the photos.

The 7 business days are counted from the photos, not from the payment. If we miss it you get your money back — the conditions are on the refund policy page.

Everything after checkout is done by people over email. There's no account, no dashboard and no upload form on these pages, and we won't ask you for your card details in an email — ever.

Payment

Payment is taken by Stripe in US dollars, on Stripe's own payment page. The card number never reaches us. The amount you see there is the amount you pay; there are no per-step fees and no upsell at the end.

What we need from you

Only send us photos of a child you're the parent or guardian of, or one whose parent has told you it's fine. Please don't send photos of anyone else without their agreement. What happens to the photos afterwards is on the privacy policy page.

Buying a book is something an adult does. We don't run accounts or age checks on these pages, and we're not set up to take orders from children.

What you can do with the book

The PDF is yours to keep. Print it and reprint it as many times as you like, for your own family and as gifts, at home or at a print shop. We won't come back and ask you to pay again for a second copy.

Anything beyond that — selling the book, or reusing the story and the art commercially — we haven't settled the terms for yet, so ask us first. See the last section on this page.

Where the AI is

We use AI to draft the story and generate the illustrations, and we say so on every page that sells the book. The same input doesn't produce the same result twice, and a generation can simply fail, which is why a person reads and approves the book before it reaches you.

If a page comes out wrong, we regenerate it. What that covers is on the refund policy page, and the split between the machine and the person is written out on how it works.

What we won't do, and what we ask you not to

We won't make

  • A book that's cruel about the child it's for, or about anyone else in it
  • Anything sexual, violent or frightening involving a child, however it's phrased
  • A book built to harass, impersonate or expose a real person

If a request lands in one of those, we'll say so and refund you rather than make it.

Please don't

  • Break the law with it, or use it to infringe someone else's rights
  • Send us other people's photos or personal information without permission
  • Put unreasonable load on the site or try to break into it

We rate-limit requests that repeat too quickly. Normal use never runs into it.

Changes and interruptions

We add and change things, and we take the site down for maintenance sometimes. Outages at the companies we depend on — payment, image generation, hosting, email — can stop the service for a while too. If an outage delays your book past the deadline, the refund promise still applies; it doesn't have an exception for our suppliers having a bad day.

What this page doesn't decide

These are open, and writing an answer here that nobody has decided would be worse than saying so. They're open on the Japanese pages too, and one decision will settle both.

  • Who formally owns the copyright in the story and the art we generate
  • Whether you can resell or license the book, and on what terms
  • Which country's law governs these terms, and where a dispute would be heard

Until they're settled, email info@kater.jp and we'll answer in writing about your specific case. Nothing here takes away rights your local consumer law gives you.
